Expand Your Stardew Valley Farm Family: A Guide to Multiple Pets

One of Stardew Valley's greatest charms is the diverse range of animals you can keep on your farm. This guide details how to acquire multiple pets, expanding your homestead beyond a single furry or feathered friend.

Initially, Stardew Valley limited players to one pet per save. However, the 1.6 update changed this, allowing for multiple companions. To unlock this feature, you must first cultivate a maximum friendship level with your existing pet.

This involves daily care: fill their water bowl (except on rainy or snowy days) and pet them daily (indicated by a heart bubble). Monitor their friendship level in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.

Once their friendship meter is full, Marnie will send a letter informing you of additional pets available at her shop. If you didn't adopt a pet in your first year, she'll send this letter at the start of Year 2.

After receiving Marnie's letter, visit her shop (9:00 am - 4:00 pm, closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Choose the "Adopt Pets" option from the dialogue menu.

You'll find a selection of 12 pet licenses: five cat variations, five dog variations, and two turtle types. Each license comes with a cost:

Before or after adopting, commission Pet Bowls from Robin's shop. These cost 5,000g and 25 Hardwood each and serve as your pets' homes, preventing friendship decay and runaway pets.

Marnie also sells decorative items like doghouses and cat trees, but these don't affect friendship levels.
