Once Human sits pretty at 230,000 peak player count, but it\'s still a long way out from mobile

NetEase's post-apocalyptic survival game, Once Human, debuted on PC with a peak concurrent player count of 230,000 on Steam, securing a seventh-place spot on the top sellers list and fifth on the most-played chart. While impressive, this initial success may be tempered by the possibility of player numbers declining quickly after launch. The game's Steam wishlist count initially exceeded 300,000, suggesting a potential gap between anticipation and sustained player engagement.

The mobile release, originally planned for September, has been delayed, though NetEase promises upcoming updates including a PvP mode pitting the Mayflies and Rosetta factions against each other, and a new PvE area in a northern mountain region with fresh challenges. Set in a world ravaged by a catastrophic event leading to supernatural occurrences, Once Human is one of NetEase's most anticipated titles.

A Cause for Concern? The use of "peak" player count is significant. The average player count is likely lower, and a post-launch drop-off could signal trouble for NetEase. This is especially noteworthy considering the game's substantial Steam wishlist numbers.

NetEase, known for its mobile game successes, is clearly aiming for a stronger PC presence. While Once Human boasts impressive graphics and gameplay, a rapid shift in primary audience might prove challenging.

The mobile launch of Once Human, whenever it arrives, is still highly anticipated. In the meantime, check out our list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far) and our list of the year's most anticipated mobile games to discover other exciting titles!
