Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein: A 20-Year Cinematic Journey
Guillermo del Toro's lifelong fascination with Frankenstein is almost as legendary as the monster itself. A recent Netflix preview showcased the director's highly anticipated adaptation, offering a glimpse into his decades-long journey to bring the classic tale to the screen. While a trailer won't be released until summer, a first-look image of Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein was unveiled.
Del Toro, in a video message, confessed his decades-long obsession, stating, "This film has been on my mind since I was a child—for 50 years. I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." The video showed a portion of his extensive Frankenstein collection within his famed Bleak House.
Brief footage was also shown, featuring Isaac's Victor Frankenstein in a confrontation with Mia Goth, portraying a wealthy aristocrat, and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster, described as having "long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a glint of red in his eyes." This footage remains unavailable online.
Del Toro further emphasized the project's personal significance, stating, "Over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this.” His dedication underscores the extensive time and effort invested in bringing this long-awaited adaptation to fruition.
