Final Fantasy Creator Can't Stop, Won't Stop; Hopes to Create FF6's Spiritual Successor
Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is back in the game development arena, despite previous retirement plans. His new project aims to be a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI.
A New Chapter After Fantasian
Following the success of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially released in 2021, Sakaguchi revealed in an interview with The Verge his intention to create a new game inspired by Final Fantasy VI. He initially intended Fantasian to be his final project before retirement, but the positive experience working with his team led him to pursue another endeavor. This new game, he states, will be "part two of my farewell note."
Development Update and Speculation
In a 2024 Famitsu interview, Sakaguchi confirmed the project, estimating roughly two more years until completion. A June 2024 Mistwalker trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" fueled fan speculation of a sequel, though this remains unconfirmed. The new game will likely maintain the fantasy RPG style of his previous works.
Reunion with Square Enix
The recent collaboration with Square Enix on the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension (December 2024) marked a full circle for Sakaguchi, who began his career at Square (now Square Enix). Despite this reunion, he remains focused on his new project and shows no interest in revisiting the Final Fantasy franchise or his past works, stating he's transitioned from creator to consumer.
Sakaguchi's legacy at Square Enix is undeniable, spanning from directing the original Final Fantasy (1987) to producing titles like Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy XI. His post-Square Enix career has seen the creation of notable titles like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. His latest venture promises a new chapter in his illustrious career.
