Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Key Updates for Guardians
Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for Destiny 2 under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy," featuring two new expansions and significant updates for both paying and free-to-play users. This year marks a significant milestone with four major content releases, including two paid expansions and two free updates.
Kicking things off is "Rite of the Nine," a fresh take on dungeon diving that's now available at no extra cost to all players. This update breathes new life into familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, offering unique twists and refreshed weapons. Whether you're a seasoned dungeon crawler or a newcomer, you'll reconnect with Orin and explore these depths with renewed excitement.
On July 15, the new expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate," will launch, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga. This paid expansion reintroduces the mysterious Nine, beings that predate the Traveler, and introduces new characters Lodi and Ikora to the forefront. Set on the new destination, Kepler, inspired by Destiny 2's dungeon puzzles and pathfinding challenges, players can expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Simultaneously, on July 15, Bungie will roll out major core game innovations, including revamped armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting opportunities. A new activity selection screen, the Portal, will streamline access to various activities. Players can choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, tailored for solo players seeking short, self-contained sessions. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will allow for deeper gameplay customization, with curated activity rotations ensuring fresh challenges and rewards.

On September 9, the "Ash & Iron" update will go live, followed by the second expansion, "Renegades," on December 2. The year concludes with the "Shadow & Order" update on March 3.
"Destiny 2: Renegades," the second expansion, draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, merging Destiny's unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.
These updates and expansions come as welcome news for the Destiny 2 community, especially following the layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, which represented 17% of Bungie's workforce, less than a year after another 100 layoffs.
While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on the reboot of their classic franchise, Marathon. Revealed in May 2023, the first real look at Marathon came last month. According to IGN's Marathon hands-on preview, it's set to fulfill the Bungie PvP experience that fans have been missing, with a release planned for PC and consoles in September.
