Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A VR Revolution on Meta Quest 3

Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making its VR debut this Spring 2025, exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. This marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Statements

2K Games and Firaxis Games unveiled the VR version during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8th, 2025. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for bringing the strategic experience to a new platform. Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the timing, stating that Civ VII VR exemplifies the momentum in mixed reality gaming. While Civ VII is launching on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR immerses players in a "Command Table" environment, offering adjustable views for detailed observation or strategic overview. The game supports both virtual and mixed reality modes, seamlessly switching between them. The VR experience places players in a museum setting, while mixed reality adapts the Command Table to the player's physical space.

Single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes are included, supporting up to four players with Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Players can team up against AI or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from the early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe/Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements, enhancing map readability, and refining overall polish based on community concerns. Future updates will include community-requested features like multiplayer teams and expanded map variety. A quality-of-life update in March will focus on UI adjustments, AI balancing, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.

Release Information

Civilization VII VR is slated for Spring 2025 release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a specific date yet to be announced.
