Borderlands 4 Launch Shift Impacts GTA 6

Borderlands 4, the next first-person shooter from Gearbox, will now launch 11 days ahead of its original schedule, as revealed by studio head Randy Pitchford in a video that was published ahead of time.

Originally scheduled for September 23, the release of Borderlands 4 has been moved up to September 12 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

In the video, Pitchford stated, "Development is progressing exceptionally well—better than expected, in fact. The game is fantastic, the team is firing on all cylinders, and because of that, we're bringing the launch forward. Borderlands 4 will now release on September 12."

"This is incredible! Moving a launch date earlier almost never happens, but it's happening now. You'll be playing Borderlands 4 sooner than planned!"

Pitchford also confirmed that the previously announced PlayStation State of Play event, which will focus on Borderlands 4, will be airing very soon.

Naturally, this announcement leads to speculation about whether the decision to bring the release forward is related to the looming giant, Grand Theft Auto VI. GTA 6 is still slated for a fall 2025 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, a broad window that could overshadow many games, including Borderlands 4. Has Gearbox's title been repositioned to gain more space?

It's important to note that Borderlands 4 is published by 2K Games, which, like Rockstar Games, is a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive. At the highest corporate level, executives like CEO Strauss Zelnick are undoubtedly aware of every major title's development timeline and aim to maximize each one's potential for success. It's possible that a more concrete release date for GTA 6 was recently established, prompting the strategic shift to give Borderlands 4 an extra two-week head start.

With Borderlands 4 now launching on September 12, a release for GTA 6 in August or September 2025 appears less likely. Could it arrive in October, November, or even December? The date for Rockstar's title is now wide open. However, the risk of internal competition remains. Releasing major titles too closely together could lead to self-cannibalization within Take-Two's portfolio. This is a relevant concern, especially with Mafia: The Old Country, another 2K title, scheduled for a summer 2025 release.

Does releasing Take-Two's flagship games—primarily meaning GTA 6—in close proximity ultimately harm their individual success? We posed this exact question to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick in an interview last February.

As expected, Zelnick emphasized that the company carefully plans its releases to avoid such overlap. The goal, he stated, is to "respect the consumer's need to spend a lot of time playing these hit games before they move on to the next."

"We plan our releases to prevent that from becoming an issue," Zelnick explained. "Our experience shows that when players are enjoying one major hit, their interest in other high-quality titles remains high. I've often said that major releases, even from competitors, are good for the industry. Of course, we hope our own titles are the hits in question. We are confident in our schedule and will time our launches to ensure players have ample time to fully enjoy each release."

Amid all this analysis, there remains the possibility that GTA 6 could be delayed, potentially into late 2025 or even the first quarter of 2026.

"There's always a slight risk of a delay, and I believe saying a release is 'absolutely' certain can sometimes tempt fate," Zelnick remarked when asked by IGN about his confidence in Rockstar hitting the fall 2025 window for GTA 6. "That said, we feel very positive about our current projections."
