Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, recently shared exciting updates on social media about the game's ongoing content and sales milestones. In a tweet celebrating the release of the guest character Conan the Barbarian, Boon announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million units sold, an increase from the previously reported four million.

Boon also teased fans with a sneak peek of the T-1000 Terminator's Fatality, showcasing a thrilling sequence where the T-1000 drives a smashed truck into his opponent, reminiscent of the iconic chase scene from Terminator 2. This glimpse has sparked enthusiasm among fans of the franchise and the film.

The tweet that accompanied the Fatality clip hinted at more to come, with Boon stating, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!" This comment has fueled speculation about additional downloadable content beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion, which includes the T-1000 as its final character alongside Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian.

Amidst discussions about the game's future, there's curiosity about whether NetherRealm Studios will introduce a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3. This interest is heightened by the game's sales success and Warner Bros. Discovery's commitment to the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav emphasized the company's focus on four key titles, including Mortal Kombat.

Ed Boon has also reassured fans about the longevity of Mortal Kombat 1's support, stating in September that the decision to develop the game was made three years prior, and the team plans to support it "for a long time to come." Despite this, there's anticipation for NetherRealm's next project, with many expecting a new entry in the Injustice series, though no official announcements have been made.

The decision to release Mortal Kombat 1 instead of an Injustice game was influenced by several factors, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. Boon explained in a June 2023 interview with IGN that these variables led to the choice to create another Mortal Kombat game, while expressing hope to return to the Injustice series in the future. He firmly stated that the door is "not at all" closed on the Injustice franchise, keeping fans hopeful for what's next from NetherRealm Studios.
