This leak presents a significant challenge for Ubisoft, a company already facing difficulties surrounding the game's development and marketing. Despite the setbacks, Ubisoft recently reported strong preorder numbers for Assassin's Creed Shadows, comparable to Assassin's Creed Odyssey. CEO Yves Guillemot expressed confidence, citing positive early feedback praising the narrative, immersive experience, and dual protagonist approach. He lauded the development team's dedication to delivering the franchise's most ambitious title yet.
The game's release date has been subject to multiple delays, initially planned for November, then shifted to February 14th, and finally to the current March 20th launch. The success of Assassin's Creed Shadows is crucial for Ubisoft, given its recent financial struggles and investor concerns. The game holds significant weight as the long-awaited Japan-set installment and the first full Assassin's Creed title since 2020.
The promotional period has been marred by controversy, including apologies for historical inaccuracies in the game's depiction of Japan and unauthorized use of a historical recreation group's flag. Further controversy arose when PureArts removed an Assassin's Creed Shadows statue from sale due to its "insensitive" design.
