Alec Baldwin's Rust: First Footage Revealed After Fatal Shooting
The first official trailer for the much-anticipated film "Rust" has been released, marking a significant moment for a project that faced a tragic incident during its production. Starring Alec Baldwin, the film experienced a devastating accident when a prop gun discharged by Baldwin fatally wounded cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza on October 22, 2021. "Rust" is scheduled to hit theaters on May 2, 2025, and you can view the trailer here.
The official synopsis of "Rust" sets the scene in the 1880s in Kansas, where young Lucas McCalister (played by Patrick Scott McDermott), recently orphaned, accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a dramatic twist, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (portrayed by Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), rescues him from jail. The duo embarks on a perilous journey toward Mexico, pursued relentlessly by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter known as 'Preacher' (Travis Fimmel).
The incident that led to Halyna Hutchins' tragic death involved a prop gun that was mistakenly loaded with live ammunition instead of being a "cold gun," which should have been safe for use. The aftermath saw charges against Alec Baldwin being dropped in April 2023, while the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for preparing the gun, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. First assistant director David Halls, tasked with ensuring the gun was unloaded, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon, receiving a sentence of six months probation.
"Rust" made its premiere at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November 2024, where the film paid tribute to Halyna Hutchins in its credits. Although Alec Baldwin did not attend the event, Joel Souza was present and spoke about Hutchins, saying, "We are here in a place that she loved so much, probably second only to being on set. I want to thank you all for coming and for taking a few hours out of your day to come celebrate my friend and to celebrate her art and her talent. She really was something."
