Unveiled gifts and Sony's updated policy for PSN on PC
Sony's recent policy on PC gaming has sparked significant backlash among the gaming community. The company's insistence on requiring a PlayStation Network (PSN) account even for single-player games, combined with the fact that PSN is not available in all regions, has led to restrictions on the sales of their modern releases.
In response to the outcry, Sony has announced some adjustments to their policy. While they have not completely abandoned the idea of requiring a PSN account for PC games, they are introducing certain relaxations. Here are the games where PSN tethering will no longer be mandatory:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarok
- The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
For those who choose to link their games to a PSN account, Sony is offering the following incentives:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the “2099” line of costumes for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarok: Immediate access to the Armor of the Black Bear set and the first “Lost Things” chest at the start of the game, along with a resource set.
- The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered: Bonus points to unlock additional features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In November, during a response to investor inquiries, Sony's COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the opposition to the PSN requirement but emphasized its importance for maintaining security and order. He specifically mentioned service-based games in relation to these restrictions, yet failed to clarify how single-player games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök benefit from mandatory PSN accounts in terms of security.
As gaming evolves, so too must the policies that govern it. Sony's adjustments reflect an attempt to balance user demands with their operational needs, though the debate over the necessity of PSN accounts in single-player games continues.
