Author : Peyton Apr 11,2025

The popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of unveiling its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting that an announcement could come "any day." During an interview with Business Insider, the team shared their ambitious plans for the future, though specifics about the game's title and its connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps. Willingham emphasized that the development team is diligently working on the project.

"They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," Willingham explained, providing insight into the interactive nature of the upcoming video game spinoff.

Willingham, who is not only an actor but also one of Critical Role's stars, co-founded the company with fellow voice acting talents such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. Since its launch, the D&D show has blossomed into a vast universe of creative projects, including the highly successful Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The upcoming video game will complement Critical Role's other ventures, though it won't necessarily be a direct tie-in. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned the team's "active pursuit" of developing a video game spinoff, indicating they were "starting to come to the end of a long road that we've been undertaking for the last couple of years." It's still uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's existing campaigns or introduce an original narrative within the Critical Role world.

Originally, the team anticipated announcing the game before the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we progress into the third month of 2025, the announcement seems imminent.

Reflecting on their approach to the gaming industry, Willingham told Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we've had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there's a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we've seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It's trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

While no release date for the Critical Role video game has been announced yet, fans can look forward to the first details on Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina in the meantime.
