Top Switch Visual Novels for 2024 Unveiled
Following my exploration of the best Switch party games in 2024, the exceptional release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the top visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This encompasses both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements. The selection spans various regions and release years, offering a diverse range of experiences. The order is entirely arbitrary.
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection
Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation. Their 2024 release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, both physically and digitally, is a stunning new addition to the series. It feels like a genuine sequel, though this might not appeal to all players. The production values are exceptional, and the shockingly good ending fully justifies its mature rating. It's a surprising highlight of my 2024 game list. Download the demo today!
For those preferring to play the originals first, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection is readily available. Fans of classic adventure game design and gameplay will find much to love.
VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)
A frequent favorite in my "best Switch games" lists, VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action excels in storytelling, music, aesthetics, and especially character development. Its Switch port is excellent, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. Regardless of your preference for point-and-click adventures, mix drinks and change lives!
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition is the definitive version of a storytelling masterpiece. This comprehensive edition includes the original game and much more, presenting a stunning visual novel experience. Its success on Switch is well-deserved, as the platform perfectly complements its gameplay. Prepare for a gothic horror journey that will leave a lasting impression, accompanied by unforgettable music.
Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)
While sold separately on the eShop and in physical imports, the North American Switch bundle justifies listing both Coffee Talk games together. Though not reaching the same heights as VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk offers a relaxing experience with a compelling narrative, charming pixel art, and delightful music. Coffee lovers and those who appreciate engaging characters will find this a perfect fit.
Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)
This entry encompasses Tsukihime, Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo), and the recently released Fate/stay night Remastered. All three are lengthy but rewarding visual novels. For newcomers to the genre, Fate/stay night is a good starting point, but Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows as a strong contender.
PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)
Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo is a surprising gem, comparable to Emio in its unexpected excellence. The narrative, presentation, and even the meta-narrative elements are captivating. This mystery adventure game boasts impressive characters, art, and mechanics, making it a worthwhile addition to any horror adventure game collection.
Gnosia ($24.99)
Often categorized as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia blends adventure and visual novel elements. The core gameplay involves identifying imposters and voting them into "cold sleep." Character progression and strategic depth make this a compelling experience, despite some minor RNG-related frustrations. Its quality is undeniable, leading me to purchase physical copies for Switch and PS5, in addition to the Steam version.
Steins;Gate Series (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate series on Switch, particularly Steins;Gate Elite, is crucial for introducing visual novels to newcomers. While I await the original Steins;Gate port, Steins;Gate Elite is a strong recommendation for anime fans seeking a quality visual novel experience. Playing the other games is best after experiencing the original story.
AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative, a collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes character designer Yusuke Kozaki, are exceptional adventure games. The quality of the story, music, and characters far surpasses expectations given their apparent budget. While a Zero Escape port is desired, these AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES titles are well worth the full price.
NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)
This adventure game, best experienced blind, shifts between disturbing horror and heartwarming moments, following a young streamer's daily life. The multiple endings and unpredictable narrative make it a memorable and unforgettable experience.
Ace Attorney Series (Variable)
Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch, including the trilogies, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, and the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection. For newcomers, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is the ideal starting point. The entire series' availability on a single handheld is a welcome addition.
Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)
Aksys Games and Experience Inc.'s Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror adventure and visual novel elements with a striking art style. While the grotesque imagery may not appeal to all, the excellent localization and storytelling are undeniable.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)
While not a pure adventure game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim's blend of real-time strategy and narrative makes it a standout title. Its compelling story and gameplay make it a must-play experience, enhanced by the Switch's OLED screen in handheld mode.
This list surpasses a typical "top 10," reflecting my desire to include all the games I strongly recommend. The inclusion of entire series reflects their overall merit. If you have suggestions, please share them in the comments. I'm always seeking exceptional stories in these genres. Thank you for reading!
Note: A separate list of otome games is in progress due to the abundance of excellent titles within that subgenre.
