Team Fortress 2 Modders Rejoice as Valve Releases Full Client and Server Game Code
Surprise! Valve has just rolled out a monumental update to the Source SDK, incorporating the entire Team Fortress 2 client and server game code. This update is a game-changer for modders and creators, enabling them to craft entirely new games from the ground up using the source code of Team Fortress 2. Unlike mods created through the Steam Workshop or local content modifications, this update grants unprecedented freedom to modders, allowing them to alter, expand, and even completely rewrite Team Fortress 2 in any way they see fit.
However, it's important to note that any creations developed using this update must be distributed for free and on a non-commercial basis. Despite this restriction, your creations can be showcased on the Steam Store, appearing as fresh entries in the Steam game list. This opens up exciting possibilities for modders to share their innovative projects with a broader audience.
Valve acknowledges the significant investment players have in their TF2 inventories and the contributions made by Steam Workshop creators. A vast majority of the items in the game are the result of the TF2 community's hard work. To honor this, Valve encourages TF2 mod makers to respect the community's efforts and avoid creating mods aimed at profiting off the work of Workshop contributors. They also hope that many mods will continue to allow players to access their TF2 inventories, where applicable.
In addition to the Source SDK update, Valve is rolling out a substantial update across its entire multiplayer back-catalog of Source engine titles. This includes enhancements such as 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and numerous other improvements to not only Team Fortress 2 but also Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source, and Half-Life: Deathmatch Source.
Back in December, after a seven-year wait, the seventh and final update for the Team Fortress 2 comic was released. These comics have been a fantastic resource for fans, offering new insights into beloved characters and stories, and they reflect Valve's ongoing dedication to one of their most enduring series.
