This week, Konami surprised classic RPG fans with a Suikoden-focused livestream, a welcome event given the franchise's long hiatus since a Japan-only PSP release over a decade ago. The announcements were a mixed bag: a Suikoden anime and a new mobile game, Suikoden: Star Leap, complete with gacha mechanics.

First, the anime, simply titled Suikoden: The Anime, adapts the events of Suikoden II and marks Konami's first animation production. Details remain scarce, including international availability, but a brief scenic preview was shown:

This is exciting for longtime fans and potentially a great introduction for newcomers, assuming broad release.

The second announcement, Suikoden: Star Leap, is generating more divided opinions. Visually stunning, with Octopath Traveler-esque 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds, the game is set between Suikoden I and Suikoden V, retaining the series' iconic 108 Stars.

PlayHowever, its mobile-only release and inclusion of gacha mechanics are controversial. This monetization strategy contrasts sharply with the series' history of premium console and PC releases. The impact of this on gameplay and character collection remains to be seen. PlayMeanwhile, *Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars* offers immediate gratification for fans. A new trailer debuted during the livestream, and the remaster launched March 6th.
