Developers Wanted To Honor The Originals
The development of Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster spanned 5 years, as the team strived for a remaster that remained true to the essence of the original games. In an insightful interview with Dengeki Online on March 4, 2025, the developers behind Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR) shed light on the meticulous process of crafting this high-quality remaster.
Initially announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the game faced delays and is now set to launch this year. Suikoden Gensho series IP and Game Director Takahiro Sakiyama disclosed that towards the end of development, the need for further debugging and review became apparent, leading to the postponement of the original release date.
Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR Game Director Tatsuya Ogushi elaborated, "Our approach was not about making bold changes, but rather about thoroughly understanding the current state. After consultations with Sakiyama and aligning on our quality standards, it became evident that there were numerous aspects requiring significant attention and improvement."
Reviving the Series
The remaster project is more than just a nostalgic revisit; it marks the initial step in revitalizing the Suikoden franchise. Suikoden series Producer Rui Naito shared the overarching vision for the franchise and hinted at potential future endeavors.
Naito emphasized to the production team, "This remaster is crucial as it represents the first step in reviving the Suikoden IP. We must ensure we do not falter here. The directive was clear: 'make it solid.' If we release a substandard product at this juncture, it could spell the end of our efforts to revive the series."

During the recent Gensou Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025, Konami unveiled a series of upcoming projects aimed at breathing new life into the Suikoden universe. Naito described the event as a pivotal second step in their revival strategy, though he remained uncertain about the total number of steps required to fully restore the franchise's prominence.
He elaborated, "We have poured our efforts into refining Suikoden I & II HDR and are equally committed to the forthcoming mobile game, Suikoden STAR LEAP, and the Suikoden II anime. Once we successfully roll out these projects, we'll be better positioned to plan our next moves."
Konami also announced "Suikoden: The Anime," an adaptation focusing on the narrative of Suikoden 2, marking a new venture for Konami Animation. Additionally, a mobile game titled "Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP" was introduced. Both projects have released teaser trailers, though official release dates remain undisclosed.
