"Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link!"
Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link has officially been cancelled by Square Enix, a decision that may not come as a shock to many given the company's history of game cancellations. The development team, which had been working on the project since 2019, conducted several closed beta tests on both Android and iOS platforms. However, in November 2024, a delay was announced on X, leaving participants of the closed beta tests surprised as the game appeared to be well into development.
Why Did Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Get Cancelled?
The team cited an inability to find a sustainable path forward that would meet player expectations over the long term. Originally envisioned as a live-service game, Missing-Link struggled to meet its ambitious goals. The concept was unique—a GPS-based spinoff set in a forgotten chapter of the Kingdom Hearts universe, where players could travel the world and fight Heartless with their keyblades. Despite the curiosity surrounding the GPS features, the concept did not translate effectively into a satisfying gameplay experience. Square Enix opted to cancel the project rather than release a substandard product, choosing instead to redirect their efforts.

But Kingdom Hearts IV Is Still Coming!
On a brighter note, Square Enix's focus has now shifted entirely to Kingdom Hearts IV. Announced at the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event in 2022, development continues to progress. Fans disappointed by the cancellation of Missing-Link can take solace in knowing that the main series remains a priority and is moving forward.
