While the previous Sony XM4 was already an excellent headphone, the XM5 brings key enhancements in noise cancellation and comfort. It's equipped with a second processor and twice the number of microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The redesigned earcups fit more snugly on the ear, creating a better seal for improved passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation outperforms the XM4 and rivals any other headset in its price range.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 also boasts a sleeker redesign with a new headband adjustment style. The wider band distributes weight more evenly, and the earcup padding is now made of luxurious synthetic leather, offering softer and more comfortable wear. You can comfortably wear these headphones for hours, although a minor drawback is that they can no longer be folded inward, only swiveled, making them less compact.
