Sony Removes PS3 Classics Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from PS5 and PS4 in Major PS Plus Overhaul

Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see the removal of 22 games from their library, including popular titles such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. These games will be pulled on May 20, 2025, marking a significant update to the service's offerings.

PlayStation Plus is a comprehensive online gaming service designed for PlayStation users. It offers a variety of perks, including free monthly games, time-limited trials, access to online multiplayer, and exclusive member discounts. Additionally, Extra and Premium members enjoy access to a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games, enhancing their gaming experience with a vast selection of titles.

As highlighted by Push Square, this upcoming removal includes two notable first-party Sony PS3 games, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, which will no longer be available through the PS Plus Premium library. This move is particularly significant because these games are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store, making the PS Plus Premium streaming service the last resort for players without a working PS3 and physical copies of the games. Both titles were added to the library at the end of 2024, less than a year before their scheduled departure.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games, is known for its alternate history first-person shooter gameplay. Following their success with Ratchet and Clank, Insomniac released three Resistance games for the PS3 before shifting focus to other projects, including Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles. The removal of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from PS Plus is unusual for first-party games, although it's not unprecedented, as seen with the removal of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West in August 2024. Unlike the Horizon games, which remained purchasable after their removal, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will become inaccessible on modern consoles.

It's worth noting that Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, the PS4 title InFamous: Second Son is also set to leave PS Plus. The Resistance series has been on hiatus for some time, and recent comments from Insomniac's Ted Price indicate a failed attempt to develop Resistance 4. This series, much like Guerrilla's Killzone, has not seen new releases in recent years.
