Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Writer Says
If you're eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie, there's good news to keep you hopeful. The Deadpool & Wolverine director is still actively working on the project, and we have a reassuring update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. In a recent chat with Screen Rant, Tropper expressed his excitement about the film, hinting that it might be coming sooner than expected. "I am [excited] too," he said. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
Currently, details about the movie remain largely under wraps, with one of the few known facts being its setting post-The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified its place in the timeline, noting that it will take place "post-[the first] nine, maybe five or six years out," making it the first film to explore the era following The Rise of Skywalker.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. Moreover, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this intriguing project.
While we might have to wait until at least late 2026, if not 2027, Tropper's optimistic words suggest that things are progressing well. Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, and several planned projects have been canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from the Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars plans, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming films.
And that's not all on Disney's Star Wars agenda. Last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars project to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode.
