MH Wilds Beta Test Extension Considered After Sudden PSN Outage

Monster Hunter Wilds is considering extending their Open Beta Test 2 by 24 hours following a significant PlayStation Network outage. Dive in to learn more about this extension and the events that led to it.

Monster Hunter Wilds To Extend Beta Test 2

PS5 Players Could Not Play For 24 Hours

Monster Hunter Wilds (MH Wilds) is contemplating a one-day extension of their Open Beta Test 2 due to a recent PlayStation Network outage that lasted 24 hours. The service disruption began at 6 PM EST on February 7th, affecting all online gameplay on the console, including the MH Wilds beta test. The PlayStation Network was restored around 8 PM EST, as announced by the official NA X (Twitter) support account.

While the specific date or time frame for the extension has yet to be announced, it is confirmed to be a 24-hour extension to compensate for the lost playtime. This could potentially extend from the end of Beta Test 2 Part 2 up until February 27th, the day before the game's official release. Part 1 of Beta Test 2 has concluded, and Part 2 is scheduled to start on February 13th at 7 PM PT. Players can look forward to resuming their adventures and perhaps encountering the amusing glitch that transforms the game's detailed characters into low-resolution, low-poly versions.

The Cursed Low-Poly Bug Returns

Capcom has acknowledged that the builds used in the beta testing phases are outdated and do not represent the final product. As a result, the beta version includes various bugs, including the well-known low-poly character glitch due to textures failing to load correctly. This glitch transforms characters, Palicos, and even the titular monsters into blocky, comical versions of themselves.

Rather than being frustrated, fans have embraced these quirky low-poly encounters, sharing them across social media. Some even express a wish for Wilds to pay homage to its polygonal beginnings in the future. In an interview with GamesRadar+, the MH Wilds team expressed amusement at the community's reaction to the bug but encouraged players to experience the game in its full glory upon its official launch later this month.

Monster Hunter Wilds marks the latest installment in the acclaimed Monster Hunter series and introduces an open-world setting known as the Forbidden Lands. Players assume the role of a Hunter, tasked with exploring this uncharted territory and confronting its apex predator, the White Wraith. The eagerly awaited action-RPG is set to launch on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on February 28th, 2025.

PlayStation Network’s Largest Outage In Recent Years

PlayStation attributed the outage to an "operational issue" in a post on its NA X (Twitter) support account and issued an apology for the inconvenience. As compensation, active PlayStation Plus members will receive an additional five days of service added to their current subscription.

However, fans expressed dissatisfaction with Sony's communication during the outage, which caused widespread concern reminiscent of the 2011 PSN outage. That incident, triggered by a hacker attack, compromised around 77 million user accounts and led to a service interruption lasting over three weeks from April 20th to May 14th. During the 2011 outage, Sony provided regular updates and conducted a thorough investigation to understand the full impact of the attack.
