New Power Rangers Live-Action Disney+ Series Reportedly Designed to Reinvent the Franchise for a New Generation of Fans
Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: Power Rangers is reportedly gearing up for a live-action revival on Disney+. According to The Wrap, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the showrunners behind the acclaimed Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, are in discussions to helm this new project for Disney+ and 20th Century TV. This development comes as Power Rangers owner Hasbro aims to reimagine the beloved series for a new generation while maintaining its appeal to long-time fans.
The original '90s TV show, The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, captivated a generation of kids with its teenage superheroes and their impressive mechs that could combine into a formidable giant robot. This nostalgic connection makes the upcoming series highly anticipated among fans who grew up with the franchise.
In 2018, Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers franchise from Saban Properties in a significant $522 million deal. At the time, Hasbro's chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, expressed enthusiasm about the brand's potential, stating, “We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire Brand Blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint.” This acquisition followed the unsuccessful 2017 movie reboot, which attempted a darker, grittier take on the franchise but failed to perform at the box office, leading to the cancellation of planned sequels and the subsequent sale to Hasbro.
Hasbro's ambitions don't stop with Power Rangers. The company is also working on other high-profile projects, such as a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms for Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series also in development at Netflix, and a cinematic universe based on Magic: The Gathering. These initiatives highlight Hasbro's commitment to expanding its entertainment offerings across various platforms and genres.
