Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again

The latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is set to launch starting May 30, 2025. As is often the case with highly anticipated releases, the pre-order phase has been chaotic, with scalpers and website issues complicating the process for fans eager to get their hands on this new set.

Destined Rivals is generating significant buzz for several reasons. It marks the return of Trainer's Pokémon cards, a beloved feature from the game's earlier days. Fans of vintage cards like Brock's Sandslash or Rocket's Mewtwo are particularly excited about this nostalgic return. Additionally, the set centers around Team Rocket, the iconic antagonist group from the first generation of Pokémon games, adding to its allure. Much like the earlier Prismatic Evolutions set, which focused on Eevee-lutions, Destined Rivals is poised to become a fan favorite.

When pre-orders for the Elite Trainer Box (ETB) went live, fans faced significant challenges. Many struggled to access the Pokémon Center website, eager to secure this themed box which typically includes card packs and other collectibles. Unfortunately, scalpers quickly listed their pre-orders on sites like eBay, with prices reaching several hundred dollars for a box that normally retails at $54.99. Joe Merrick from Serebii expressed his frustration, highlighting how the Pokémon TCG community has increasingly become driven by financial motives rather than the joy of the game itself.

This issue is not unique to Destined Rivals. Previous sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151 also faced similar shortages and rapid sell-outs. The Pokémon Company has acknowledged the situation, stating in an FAQ (via PokéBeach) that more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB will be available later this year. However, the problem extends beyond scalping; some fans have reported that their ETB orders are being cancelled due to overwhelming demand.

The soaring popularity of the Pokémon TCG has undeniably led to increased frustration among fans who simply want to enjoy the hobby. While Pokémon TCG Pocket offers a digital alternative to physical scarcity, many enthusiasts prefer the tactile experience of opening packs and playing with physical cards. A visit to your local store's card aisle might reveal the difficulty in finding these coveted packs. As exciting as these releases are, the community hopes for swift solutions to these persistent issues.
