The PlayStation Portal is a handheld streaming device that allows users to remotely play PS5 games over Wi-Fi. Formerly known as Project Q, it features an 8-inch Full HD LCD screen with support for 1080p resolution at 60fps. It integrates key elements of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, delivering a console-like experience in a portable form factor.

“PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house,” Sony stated in its official announcement. “PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal.”

Enhanced Wi-Fi Connectivity with Latest Update

A core feature of the PlayStation Portal is its ability to stream games from a user’s PS5 console via Wi-Fi, enabling smooth transitions between TV and handheld gameplay. While the concept is powerful, early adopters reported inconsistent performance, largely due to connectivity limitations. The system originally only supported 2.4GHz Wi-Fi bands, which often resulted in lower bandwidth and unstable streaming—especially in environments with high network traffic.

To address this, Sony rolled out System Update 3.0.1, a major upgrade that now allows the PlayStation Portal to connect to select 5GHz Wi-Fi networks. This improvement significantly boosts connection stability and streaming quality, especially in homes with robust broadband setups. Sony recommends a minimum of 5Mbps internet speed for optimal Remote Play performance.

The update has already received positive feedback from users on social media. “I’m the biggest portal hater, but mine is playing much much better so far,” one Reddit user shared, reflecting a growing sentiment of improved reliability post-update.
