How Big is the Nintendo Switch 2?

Author : Aaliyah Mar 19,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer immediately reveals a significant size increase compared to its predecessor. As the original Joy-Con detach, the tablet section visibly expands, hinting at a departure from the compact handhelds of the past and a move towards larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad. While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, we can offer a reasonable estimate based on the trailer and a recent leak.

At CES 2025, we handled a Switch 2 mock-up by peripheral maker Genki. Though unverified at the time, Nintendo's trailer shows a console remarkably similar to the mock-up, suggesting the CES measurements are quite accurate. Let's explore these estimated dimensions.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

We estimate the Switch 2 boasts an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement, excluding bezels). This aligns with earlier 2024 rumors. This translates to approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall. This represents a nearly 30% diagonal increase and a 66% larger screen area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch display.

Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2's screen is 45% larger diagonally (111% larger in area) than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen and 14% larger diagonally (30% larger in area) than the Switch OLED's 7-inch screen. While larger than the original Steam Deck's 7-inch display and the Steam Deck OLED's 7.4-inch display, the Switch 2 is still slightly smaller, offering an 8% diagonal and 11% area advantage over Valve's OLED option.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

The larger screen necessitates a larger console. Measurements from the Genki mock-up suggest the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. This is about 25% larger than the original Switch (239mm x 102mm), 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). Thickness appears similar to the original Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The trailer suggests the Joy-Con width remains similar, but they're taller. Our estimates place the new Joy-Con at approximately 32mm wide and 115mm tall—the same width as the originals (excluding the slot) and 13mm taller, representing a 13% size increase.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the Switch 2 screen unit to be around 200mm long and 115mm tall—approximately 31% larger than the original. This allows for approximately 11mm side bezels and 8mm top and bottom bezels.

Remember, these are estimations. While based on the Genki mock-up, they may differ from Nintendo's official dimensions. However, we anticipate a console roughly 25% larger than the original Switch.
