Nintendo Switch 2 Filings Reveal NFC Support, Suggesting Amiibo Will Work With It

Recent filings with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have shed light on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, confirming that it will support Near Field Communication (NFC). This feature, located in the right Joy-Con as with the original Switch, suggests that Amiibo figures will continue to be compatible with the next-generation console. This raises the question of whether existing Amiibo will unlock in-game content on the Switch 2 as they do on current models.

In addition to NFC, the filings reveal that the Switch 2 can be charged via both its bottom and a new top USB-C port, a convenience that was anticipated following the console's initial reveal. The new console will also support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks, offering up to 80MHz of bandwidth, an upgrade from the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) on the original Switch. However, there is no mention of Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E in these documents.

The power specifications indicate that the Switch 2 is rated for a maximum of 15V, but an AC adapter capable of up to 20V is mentioned, leaving the actual charging speed a mystery for now.

A Nintendo patent has also hinted at innovative Joy-Con design changes for the Switch 2. The new controllers may attach upside down using magnets rather than the rails of the original Switch, potentially allowing players to customize button and port placement. This could introduce new gameplay mechanics if implemented in the final product.

Nintendo plans to provide a full outline of these features at a special Nintendo Direct event, scheduled for April 2 at 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time.

The release window for the Nintendo Switch 2 remains unconfirmed by Nintendo, but speculation points to a launch between June and September. This speculation is fueled by upcoming hands-on events and a statement from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon, suggesting the console's availability before September.

The brief trailer released in January confirmed backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port, but left many details undisclosed, including the function of a new, mysterious button on the Joy-Con and other game titles. Theories about the new button, such as it possibly functioning as a mouse, have been circulating among fans.
