Mojang Rejects Minecraft 2: 'No Earth 2?'
Minecraft marked its 15th anniversary last year, and despite entering its teenage phase, developer Mojang has firmly stated that there are no plans for a sequel. During a visit to their Stockholm studio, IGN posed the question of a potential follow-up to the best-selling game of all time. Ingela Garneij, executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, responded with a straightforward and humorous quip: "Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2."
While the idea of Minecraft 2.0 is off the table, the survival-crafting phenomenon is set to continue its evolution. Mojang has ambitious plans to extend the game's lifespan by at least another 15 years. Ingela Garneij elaborated on this vision, saying, "We've existed for 15 years. We want to exist at least 15 years more so we actually, Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I, we work as a team. We set the vision and strategy for our game for what can we do beyond that."
Mojang's commitment to innovation is driving this long-term vision, building upon the game's robust foundations. However, Garneij acknowledged that these foundations are aging, which poses challenges. "I think the age of the game is a challenge," she explained. "It's a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So other new games have new engines, and they can run really fast. So I would say the technology and our age [are our biggest challenges]."
Despite these hurdles, Minecraft remains one of the world's most popular games, showing no signs of slowing down. Mojang has no intention of shifting to a free-to-play model or integrating generative AI technology. Fans eager for new content should keep an eye on updates like the recently announced Vibrant Visuals graphics update, though they should not expect a sequel anytime soon. As Garneij put it, "Not on this Earth, anyway."
