Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

A new Street Fighter movie has announced its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the wildly entertaining The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this latest adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, with Capcom deeply involved in the project. Fans can mark their calendars for the film's release on March 20, 2026.

This upcoming movie marks another attempt to bring the iconic Street Fighter franchise to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 film that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the unforgettable Raul Julia as M. Bison. While critics at the time may not have been kind, the film has since gained a cult following.

Details on casting are still under wraps, but it's safe to assume that beloved Street Fighter characters will make their way into the film. Initially, the project had Danny and Michael Philippou, directors of Talk to Me, attached to direct, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement hints at a possible shift towards a more absurdist take on the Street Fighter universe, which could be a refreshing and exciting direction for fans who appreciate the game's more whimsical elements.

While waiting for the movie, fans can dive into the latest installment of the franchise, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as its newest fighter. For more on the game, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review [ttpp].
