"Lionsgate's Monopoly Film Gets Script from Dungeons & Dragons Writers"
The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has taken a significant step forward with the announcement that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will pen the screenplay. These talented writers and directors, known for their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, bring a fresh perspective to the adaptation of Hasbro's iconic board game.
The film will be produced by Margot Robbie under her production company, LuckyChap, adding another layer of excitement to this project. Daley and Goldstein have been busy recently, not only with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves but also with their original film Mayday. Their writing credits extend to high-profile films such as The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their versatility and skill in crafting engaging stories.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were tapped to write the script, but the project didn't move forward. Another attempt in 2015 saw Lionsgate and Hasbro collaborating on a version written by Andrew Niccol, followed by reports in 2019 that Kevin Hart and director Tim Story would be involved. However, none of these efforts materialized into a film.
The recent acquisition of eOne by Lionsgate from Hasbro has reignited the project, and with Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the screenplay, there's renewed hope that this version of the Monopoly movie will finally "pass Go" and make it to theaters.
