Kylo Ren's Lost Year Explored in Star Wars: Legacy of Vader

Author : Sarah Mar 28,2025

Marvel's Star Wars comic line is undergoing a significant transformation. Previously centered on the year between *The Empire Strikes Back* and *Return of the Jedi* with titles like *Star Wars*, *Darth Vader*, and *Doctor Aphra*, Marvel is now exploring new territories within the Star Wars universe. The latest addition, *Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku*, delves into the final confrontation between the Rebel Alliance and the remnants of the Empire. Another upcoming series, *Star Wars: Jedi Knights*, will illuminate the Jedi Order's history before *The Phantom Menace*. Perhaps the most captivating is *Star Wars: Legacy of Vader*, which promises an in-depth exploration of Adam Driver's character, Kylo Ren.

IGN recently sat down with *Legacy of Vader* writer Charles Soule to discuss the new series and how it adds new dimensions to the complex character of Ben Solo. Before diving into the interview, take a look at an exclusive preview of the series in the slideshow gallery below.

Returning to the Story of Kylo Ren

Charles Soule, who has been pivotal in Marvel's portrayal of the post-*Empire Strikes Back* era through his work on the flagship *Star Wars* series and major crossovers like *War of the Bounty Hunters* and *Dark Droids*, is eager to explore Kylo Ren once more. Soule previously penned *The Rise of Kylo Ren* in 2020, and now, with *Legacy of Vader*, he aims to delve deeper into Kylo's narrative.

"I've wanted to get back to Kylo Ren for ages," Soule told IGN. "It's been over four years since *The Rise of Kylo Ren*, and I've always felt there was more to his story. Much like Darth Vader, the films only scratch the surface – a lot of Kylo's journey is implied or left untold."

Soule is particularly excited about setting *Legacy of Vader* right after *The Last Jedi*, a period where Kylo Ren undergoes significant transformation. "It's an opportunity to explore a character who's experienced immense change in a short time," he explains. "Kylo is as emotional as it gets, which makes for compelling storytelling."

The collaboration with artist Luke Ross adds to Soule's enthusiasm. "I'll work with Luke any chance I get!" he says. "His work has only improved with each project, and in *Legacy of Vader*, he captures Kylo Ren's turmoil and cold rage beautifully. Alongside our colorist Nolan Woodard, they're delivering exceptional work."

Ben Solo After The Last Jedi

Set immediately after *The Last Jedi*, *Legacy of Vader* captures Ben Solo at a critical juncture. Having failed to turn Rey to the Dark Side and faced his uncle Luke Skywalker one last time, Ben is now in command of the galaxy's most powerful military force. The series will delve into Kylo Ren's internal struggles as he attempts to sever ties with his past.

"Ben is still in there somewhere," Soule remarks. "But at this moment, he's buried deep within Kylo Ren's psyche. He's faced his mentors, killed his father, nearly killed his mother, met Rey, and taken control of the First Order – all in a matter of weeks. It's intense and fresh, making it hard for him to move forward."

The series begins with Ben visiting Darth Vader's fortress on Mustafar, seeking to commune with his grandfather's legacy. Soule notes that Ben is deeply conflicted about his connection to Anakin Skywalker. "Kylo isn't honest with himself," he says. "He's all about grand pronouncements, but he's lost. While he wants to kill his past, he's also seeking guidance."

The internal politics of the First Order will also be a significant focus. General Hux and officers like Allegiant General Pryde, who are plotting against Kylo Ren, will play crucial roles. "The First Order's internal politics are a playground for storytelling," Soule says. "Hux and Pryde are both in the book, and how Kylo navigates and manipulates the First Order is part of his journey."

*Star Wars: Legacy of Vader* aims to enhance our understanding of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and add new layers to his character. While we know the end of his story, the series will provide insights into his motivations and choices leading up to *The Rise of Skywalker*.

"I've been telling Star Wars stories for a decade now," Soule concludes. "Each story stands on its own but also adds to the larger Star Wars narrative. *Legacy of Vader* is about Kylo's struggle to define himself amidst turmoil and pain. It's a story of searching for identity, filled with action and drama, that fans will love."

*Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1* is set to release on February 5, 2025.
