Gandhi Excluded from Civ 7, but Nukes Debated
The "Nuclear Gandhi" myth: A Civilization legend debunked
The infamous "Nuclear Gandhi" bug from the original Civilization game is a well-known gaming legend. But was this tale of a pacifist leader unleashing nuclear devastation actually true? Let's explore the history and reality of this enduring myth.
The Legend: The story claims that in the original Civilization, leaders had an aggression value (1-10, or 1-12 depending on the account), with 1 being pacifist. Gandhi, being historically pacifist, started at 1. Upon adopting Democracy, his aggression supposedly dropped by 2, resulting in -1. The legend posits that this negative value, stored as an 8-bit unsigned integer, caused an overflow, maxing out his aggression at 255, making him incredibly aggressive and prone to nuclear attacks.
The Reality: Sid Meier, the game's creator, and Brian Reynolds, lead designer of Civilization II, have debunked this. Meier stated it was impossible due to two key factors: integer variables were signed (not unsigned), preventing the overflow, and government types didn't affect aggression levels. Reynolds confirmed only three aggression levels existed, and Gandhi's pacifism was shared by other leaders. There was no code to make a leader more aggressive even if the aggression parameter was exceeded.
The Spread of the Myth: The Nuclear Gandhi myth didn't gain traction until the mid-2010s, long after the original Civilization's popularity waned. Its spread was likely fueled by a 2012 entry on TV Tropes, which was then picked up by gaming publications.
A Twist: While the original Civilization didn't have a Nuclear Gandhi bug, Civilization V did feature a design choice where Gandhi's AI had a high preference for nuclear weapons, despite his peaceful nature. This might explain the myth's origins and persistence.
The Legacy: Even debunked, the Nuclear Gandhi myth remains iconic, highlighting the power of gaming legends and the enduring appeal of ironic gameplay. Civilization VI even acknowledged the myth. With Gandhi absent from Civilization VII, the legend might finally rest, but some myths are simply too compelling to die.
