Final Fantasy XIV North American Servers Suffer Major Outage: Power Outage, Not DDoS

A significant server outage impacted all four North American data centers of Final Fantasy XIV on January 5th, beginning around 8:00 PM Eastern Time. While the game has faced numerous distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks throughout 2024, this incident appears to stem from a different source.

Social media reports and Reddit discussions point to a power outage in the Sacramento area as the likely culprit. Users reported hearing a loud explosion consistent with a blown power transformer, a plausible explanation for the simultaneous disruption across all four data centers located in the region. Servers returned to service approximately an hour after the initial reports. Square Enix has acknowledged the issue on the Lodestone and confirmed an ongoing investigation.

The Europe, Japan, and Oceanic data centers remained unaffected, further supporting the theory of a localized power problem rather than a widespread network attack. Restoration was gradual, with Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers coming back online before Dynamis.

This latest incident adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Final Fantasy XIV's infrastructure. Despite the game's ambitious plans for 2025, including the anticipated launch of a mobile version, server stability continues to be a key concern. The long-term implications of these recurring issues remain to be seen.
