Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, along with several other Fallout developers, has expressed a strong desire to work on a new entry in the Fallout series. However, there's a crucial condition.

Fallout Devs Willing to Work on a New Series Entry, But…

The Need for Creative Novelty

In a YouTube Q&A, Josh Sawyer stated his willingness to helm another Fallout game, but only if given significant creative freedom. He emphasized the importance of project parameters: "Any project hinges on 'what are we doing, what are the boundaries, what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?'" He further clarified, "If those constraints are too restrictive, it's not appealing, because who wants to work on something where the very thing they want to explore isn't possible?"

This sentiment is echoed by other Fallout developers. Last year, Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster. In an interview with The Gamer, Cain highlighted the need for innovation: "Every RPG I've ever made offered me something new and different that got me interested. It was the game itself that offered me something interesting that made me go 'Ooh, I want to do that, I've never done that.' If someone came to me and said, 'You want to make a Fallout game?' My answer is 'Well, what's new?' I didn't even want to make Fallout 2, why would I want to make a new Fallout? What's different about it?"

Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also shared his enthusiasm for another Fallout project, should the opportunity arise. However, in a January 2023 interview with Game Pressure, he confirmed that no such project was currently underway. "We’re not working on Fallout, and we haven’t even talked about what it would be," he stated, explaining that Obsidian's current slate includes Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2. He added, "I don’t know when we’re going to start talking about new games, maybe towards the end of [2023]. But I’ll stick to what I said. I would love to make another Fallout before I retire. I don’t know when that is, I don’t have a date of my retirement. It’s funny, you can say I’m already 52, or only 52. It’s one of those two, depending on the day. My hope is that’ll happen, but we’ll have to wait and see."
