Evangelion Crossover Fails to Impress NIKKE Players

Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 event, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, encountered several setbacks.

The initial character designs, a joint effort between Shift Up and NIKKE, were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators, necessitating revisions. While the adjusted designs satisfied the licensors, they failed to resonate with players. The resulting costumes, particularly Asuka's premium gacha skin, lacked the visual appeal to incentivize purchases; it bore too close a resemblance to her standard attire.

Player feedback highlighted a lack of compelling reasons to invest in limited-time characters and skins. The collaboration, critics argue, diluted NIKKE's core identity—its distinctive style of anime characters and engaging narrative—leaving players feeling unfulfilled. The event itself was also criticized for feeling drawn out and lacking inspiration.

Shift Up acknowledged these shortcomings and pledged to incorporate player feedback into future collaborations. The hope is that subsequent events will showcase more creative and engaging content. Both Goddess of Victory: NIKKE and Neon Genesis Evangelion are available on the Google Play Store.
