DC's Absolute Universe: A Chronological Reading Guide
DC's All In publishing initiative is a groundbreaking project that allows top-tier creators to explore the iconic heroes of the DC Universe without the shackles of established continuity. Spearheaded by industry veterans Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson, the initiative includes the Absolute Universe, which builds upon and expands the Absolute Power arc from late 2024. This new ongoing storyline introduces a fresh status quo for the legendary trio of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, promising to challenge fans' preconceptions about these beloved characters.
Since its launch in October, the Absolute Universe has captivated readers with its multiple ongoing titles. However, keeping up with the intricate details and timelines can be challenging. Here, we provide a comprehensive guide to the chronology and reading order of DC's Absolute Universe for 2025.
Note: It's important to differentiate between the Absolute Universe titles and DC's "Absolute" collected editions, such as the new Absolute Batman: Zero Year. These are entirely separate entities.
The Reading Order
For all ongoing series, begin with our suggested reading order, then continue with subsequent issues as they are released. Each main Absolute series will consist of a six-issue run, with future trade paperback collections on the horizon.
1. DC All In Special #1 by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Wes Craig, and Daniel Sampere
DC All In Special #1
This oversized one-shot, crafted by architect Scott Snyder, lays the groundwork for the Absolute Universe. It's essential to start here before diving into Absolute Batman.
2. Absolute Batman #1 by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta
Absolute Batman #1
First published in October 2024, Absolute Batman #1 marks the true beginning of the Absolute Universe. It presents a gritty, innovative take on the Dark Knight, exploring a world where Bruce Wayne is not wealthy, has no high-tech Batcave, and lacks the guidance of his butler, Alfred.
3. Absolute Wonder Woman #1 by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman
Absolute Wonder Woman #1
Released just weeks after Absolute Batman #1 at the end of October, this issue reimagines Wonder Woman, turning the Greek mythos on its head. Diana is portrayed as a fierce, heavily armed Amazon warrior on a quest for purpose.
4. Absolute Superman #1 by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval
Absolute Superman #1
Written by acclaimed writer Jason Aaron, known for Southern Bastards and Thor, Absolute Superman #1 continues the trend of examining how heroes would cope without their traditional advantages. Here, the Man of Steel becomes more relatable, emerging from humble beginnings.
5. Absolute Flash #1 by Jeff Lemire and Nick Robles
Absolute Flash #1
Kicking off the second wave of the initiative in 2025, Absolute Flash #1 challenges Wally West to master the complexities of speed without the support of the Flash family or the Speed Force.
6. Absolute Martian Manhunter #1 by Deniz Camp and Javier Rodriguez
Absolute Martian Manhunter #1
The second title in the 2025 wave, Absolute Martian Manhunter #1, presents a significant departure from the character's original narrative. FBI agent John Jones finds himself gradually overtaken by a Martian, drawing him into a conflict far greater than he ever imagined.
7. Absolute Green Lantern #1 by Al Ewing and Jahnoy Lindsay
Absolute Green Lantern #1
This issue reimagines the Green Lantern mythos, featuring four individuals who have previously held the title: Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and newcomer Jo Mullein. They must navigate the aftermath of a large Green Lantern crash-landing in a small town.
Upcoming Collected Editions
Currently, only the first three Absolute titles have announced release dates for their collected editions:
- Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo releases on August 5
- Absolute Wonder Woman Vol. 1: The Last Amazon releases on August 12
- Absolute Superman Vol. 1: The Last Dust of Krypton releases on August 19
This is the current scope of the Absolute Universe, but fans can anticipate further developments, possibly culminating in a major event or finale by the end of 2025 or beyond, with additional heroes receiving the Absolute treatment.
