Buy Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Before Switch 2 Release

Nintendo unveiled exciting details about the Switch 2 during its April Direct, and since then, U.S. fans have been eagerly awaiting the start of preorders. While the price of the new console didn't come as a shock, the cost of first-party Switch 2 games at launch certainly raised some eyebrows. Notably, *Mario Kart World* will be priced at a hefty $80 upon release. Additionally, Nintendo is rolling out a new range of Switch 2 accessories, which have also seen price hikes compared to the original Switch, with some even becoming pricier since their initial announcement.

The new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at $85, was the only accessory that caught my attention. Having multiple Switch Pro controllers already, I was relieved to learn from Nintendo's developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will be compatible with the Switch 2.

Where You Can Still Buy Switch Pro Controllers

Not the Switch 2 version. See it at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. While many might opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not necessary for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can save up to $80 for new games by sticking with it. If you're planning to buy the Switch 2 but don't have a Pro controller yet, the standard version is currently a more affordable option at $69.99.

It's worth noting that these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2 hits the market to make way for the new model. Amazon is already experiencing significant stock shortages and is mostly offering third-party alternatives. Alongside the compatibility of the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will also work with the Switch 2, though we generally recommend the Switch Pro controller over Joy-Con for most games.

When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?

If your heart is set on the new Switch 2 Pro controller, you'll need to wait until the console launches on June 5. The new controller will be available for purchase on that date. Preorders for the Switch 2 and its accessories are set to begin on April 24. However, keep in mind that the Switch 2 Pro controller will only work with the Switch 2 and not with the original Switch.
