Originally launched on itch.io in September 2022, Atuel quickly captured the gaming community's attention with its unique blend of documentary storytelling, experimental gameplay, and dreamlike visuals. The game's innovative approach earned it the 'Innovation in Experience Design Award' at IndieCade 2022, along with numerous other accolades. It has also been showcased at prestigious events such as the Marché du Film at Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

What Do You Do in Atuel, the Documentary Game?

Set in the Atuel River Valley of Argentina, a region known for its stunning beauty yet struggling with the impacts of climate change, Atuel offers players an immersive experience. In the game, you transform into various animals and elements of the ecosystem, becoming an integral part of the landscape. One moment you might be gliding through the sky, and the next, you're flowing as the river itself.

The game also features real-life interviews with historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents, providing insights into the region's history, its current state, and the looming future shaped by climate change. Matajuegos worked alongside the international documentary team, The 12.01 Project, to craft these compelling narratives. The visuals, inspired by the Cuyo desert, create an almost otherworldly atmosphere that truly sets Atuel apart.
