The Authority Film Delayed: Gunn Struggles with Tone Amid The Boys' Success

It appears that the DCU movie The Authority is facing challenges, as confirmed by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Announced as part of Gunn and Peter Safran's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters DC Universe reboot two years ago, The Authority was highlighted as a significant project. However, Gunn recently described it as the "hardest" of the announced projects during a DC Studios presentation.

Gunn pointed out that the success of Amazon's The Boys has influenced the development of The Authority. He noted that the shifting overall story and the need to differentiate The Authority from similar themes in The Boys have contributed to its difficulties. Additionally, Gunn mentioned the desire to integrate characters from already filmed projects into the larger DCU narrative, which has put The Authority on the "back burner" for now.

The Authority isn't the only project from Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters facing hurdles. Gunn mentioned that Waller, a spinoff of his HBO Max series Peacemaker, has experienced setbacks. On a more positive note, the HBO Max series Booster Gold is progressing well, and Paradise Lost remains a priority with active development, including the pilot currently being written.

Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is prepared to wait for director James Mangold, who is currently working on another project, A Complete Unknown. Safran expressed enthusiasm for Mangold's vision and willingness to accommodate his schedule. However, Gunn clarified that Swamp Thing is not central to the overarching DCU story, having been pitched to them by Mangold himself.
