The 10 Best Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author : Hazel Mar 15,2025

In this exploration of retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, we're taking a slightly different approach. The Switch doesn't boast as many dedicated Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports as some other consoles—a surprising fact, we know! So, we're combining them into a single list, mirroring their shared shelf space in the past. While the Nintendo Switch Online app offers many great Game Boy Advance titles, we're focusing on those available on the Switch eShop. Here are ten of our favorites—four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS gems. No particular order, let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a special place in many hearts, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative. It's a worthwhile comparison to the original, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. Regardless of your platform preference, Steel Empire is a compelling game, even for those who typically shy away from shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, a true successor emerged on the Game Boy Advance: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action series, albeit one with a few initial rough edges. These imperfections are smoothed out in later installments, but the first game is the perfect starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

Yes, another Mega Man entry! But Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network are distinct experiences, both deserving of recognition. This RPG boasts a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed, and the game fully embraces this premise. While later entries saw diminishing returns, this original offering is packed with fun.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but if we had to choose a standout, it's Aria of Sorrow. For many, it's even preferred over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes the grind worthwhile. Its unique setting and hidden secrets solidify its status as a top-tier third-party Game Boy Advance title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae enjoyed cult status, but limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, catapulted the Half-Genie Hero to greater fame, establishing her as a console staple. Interestingly, this game's origins are somewhat intertwined with an unreleased Game Boy Advance title—a game slated for release soon, potentially joining this list in the future.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Technically, this could be considered a Game Boy Advance title, given its origins. However, its initial release lacked localization. Ace Attorney needs no introduction. These adventure games blend investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes, goofy humor, and compelling stories. The first game sets a high bar, and while later installments are also strong contenders, this remains a classic.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the truth about your own death. This wild ride deserves a playthrough, and we're grateful Capcom continues to support this sleeper hit.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

The World Ends With You is arguably one of the best Nintendo DS games. The original DS version is arguably the definitive experience, perfectly tailored to the hardware. However, the Switch version serves as an excellent alternative for those without access to a working DS. This game is a masterpiece in almost every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are worth playing, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the improved button controls replacing the original's touch controls. But seriously, play them all!

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

This franchise thrives within the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus has created a playable Switch adaptation. Each Etrian Odyssey game stands alone, offering substantial RPG experiences. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a challenging but rewarding adventure.
