Auction Bridge & IB

Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB) represent a significant stage in the evolution of the Bridge card game, evolving from Bridge Whist. Preceding Contract Bridge, its lineage traces back to Whist and Bridge Whist.

While sharing similarities with Contract Bridge in gameplay and rules, Auction Bridge & IB features distinct scoring systems. Trick scoring, bonus scoring, and penalty scoring differ substantially, and the concept of vulnerability is absent. Trump selection, though similar in principle, is less complex than in Contract Bridge.

The opening bid is made by the dealer, who must contract to win at least the odd trick in a chosen trump suit or at No-trumps. The value of a bid is determined primarily by points (excluding doubles), not solely by the number of tricks. For instance, a bid of 3 Spades (27 points) surpasses a bid of 4 Clubs (24 points).

Trick scoring beyond six tricks is as follows:

• No-trumps: 10 points
• Spades: 9 points
• Hearts: 8 points
• Diamonds: 7 points
• Clubs: 6 points

A game is achieved at 30 points.
